1705 Mesa Vista Road sat vacant for years. Boarded up, it was repeatedly vandalized and home to squatters who didn’t practice the three cardinal principles. In early 2020, Kim Murphy, former director of UNM Real Estate and New Mexico Alpha Phi learned that the UNM Board of Regents had voted to tear down 1705 due to its deteriorating state. Brother Murphy gathered a group of Phis to discuss the pending demolition and to ask if an effort should be mounted to save Phi Delt’s home. This exploratory committee revived the chapter house corporation, New Mexico Phi Education Incorporated under the leadership of former chapter advisor and Omega Province President, John Jones, and Brother John Bannerman did yeoman’s work to reestablish New Mexico Phi Education Inc. as a non-profit in good standing with the New Mexico Secretary of State and the IRS.
The House Corporation began exploring the feasibility of restoring 1705. An architect was engaged to draw renovation plans, which were then sent to contractors for construction bids. After the received estimates were beyond the scope of what seemed reasonable to renovate the space, the House Corporation voted to ask UNM to continue with plans to demolish the house and turn over a blank slate for a long term ground lease and new construction. It wasn’t an easy decision since 1705 held memories for so many.
The new Chapter House will have ample Brotherhood space and study areas throughout. The first floor will have a ADA-compliant suite with office which can be reserved for a possible live-in advisor or Chapter President. The second floor will have seven double-occupancy bedrooms each with en suite bathroom.
Ground breaking is planned for Homecoming 2025 with occupancy Fall, 2027.
